Fred Bear was born in Waynesboro, Pennsylvania on March 5, 1902. At the age of 21 he left the family farm to try and make a career in Detroit in the growing auto industry. A documentary on Art Young's archery adventures has kindled a fire in Fred's imagination. Shortly thereafter he learned how to make his bows, arrows and ropes under the tutelage of Young himself.
In 1933, Fred was engaged in a company that produced advertising materials for the automotive industry, while, in his spare time, he produced bows for his growing circle of friends who appreciated his works. Within six years, archery work required Fred's full-time dedication and it was then that the Bear Archery Company was born.
His great passion for archery led Bear to promote the introduction of a specific archery season in Michigan in 1936.
A skilled marksman, he won the state championships in 1934, 1937 and 1939. A frequent visitor to the shooting ranges he was an inspirer of both novice archers and established ones according to his natural shooting talent.
In 1942, Fred and editor Jack Van Coevering produced the first of a long series of films in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan that saw Fred engaged in various archery adventures. These films along with numerous appearances in trade magazines sparked interest in archery and Bear Archery products. Fred Bear soon became a distinguishable icon for his red face and Borsalino hat.
In 1947 the company moved to Grayling in Michigan and in the next two decades Fred traveled around the world on hunting expeditions combined with video footage. These advertisements also linked to the appearance in Life magazine further increased Fred Bear's international stature.
Fred remained active in product research and in the promotion of archery until his death in 1988. Fred will always be remembered for his immeasurable contribution in promoting archery and for products that performed well beyond of their price.
