Shilin Cutters knives are handmade by a member of the Chiu family. The history of these knives began in 19th century China and was taught to a select few. Some of these makers migrated to Taiwan where they continued to make these infamous knives. Over time, many of these producers have ceased production and only two families in Taipei have continued to produce them in recent times. Today the doors of Chiu's house are closed and it is not known if they will reopen.
